Since we’ve gone vegan we’ve been following Lindsey aka The Saucy Vegan. She lives in the same city as us and finds all the best vegan spots. We have discovered so many local vegan spots because of her account so we decided to chat with her about restaurants, veganism, and the lady behind “The Saucy Vegan.”
What are your top 3 favorite vegan restaurants in LA/OC?
Oh man, this is the toughest question to start with for me! I love food way too much. Since I have to play favorites, I suppose I would say Crossroads in LA for brunch. Those Chicken & Waffles just get me. I also love Blue Window adjacent to Mud Hen Tavern in LA. They completely change the menu every six months, and almost every item is either already-vegan or has a vegan counterpart. Chef Kajsa is the sweetest and loves getting creative with vegan food, which I think is awesome! In Orange County, there’s a spot called Freesoulcaffe that I often miss living closer to. It started off as just sandwiches, soups, salads and the most amazing dessert case, but has grown to pizzas, burgers, and pasta dishes now, too. I don’t even like sweets all that much, but I can’t leave the place without taking a few things home with me! All of their food seems warming and comforting to me, and it’s a nice quiet place to dine.
When did you become vegan and what influenced you?
I have been vegetarian for thirteen years, but I went vegan about four or five years ago. I was working for a vegan food truck/kitchen at the time; so, the transition was easy when I was surrounded by only amazing vegan food options!
What is your favorite vegan meal?
Oh man, this is so difficult. I love tacos. I love burritos. Pizza. Pasta. Sandwiches. Sushi. Brunch! I love brunch so much. I just can’t choose a favorite meal, unless the meal consists of about fifteen plates of all my favorite foods.
Who is someone in the vegan community that inspires you?
My friends! I have so many amazing vegan friends, and have made so many more through the Southern California vegan community. I think we all can get along because our favorite thing to do is EAT!
What advice would offer someone who is considering going vegan?
My first piece of advice to anyone is to GO SHOPPING! If being vegan is truly something you want to do, your kitchen has to be set up for success, and not failure. If you keep a bunch of non-vegan things in your pantry, you’ll be tempted to fall back on convenience and use them. Luckily, today’s stores are stocked with the most convenient vegan dishes (frozen section!) and easily labeled items. I am a saucy person, so having a stocked fridge and pantry full of spices and sauces is always a great start. If you have a variety of grains/starches on hand at all times (rice, pasta, potatoes, quinoa, bulgar, etc.), and a bunch of sauce bases, all you need to add is fresh produce to make a variety of meals everyday! I like to always keep tofu on hand, along with some faux meat options in my freezer (I love Gardein) for those nights you want to get creative and make more than just veggies and rice. Please don’t live off of stir fry because it seems like the only vegan option. Take chances and try new things! Also, learn to love to cook! Experimenting in the kitchen is my favorite thing to do. I love the challenge of veganizing some of my favorite dishes I ate growing up. It’s comforting and exciting to know that anything in the world I ever crave, I know I can make a delicious vegan version of it at home.
Who is the lady behind The Saucy Vegan? Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My name is Lindsey and I am originally from the Midwest (Indiana), but have called Southern California home for nearly 13 years! I currently reside in Long Beach, and I absolutely love it. I am obsessed with my French Bulldog, Ellie, and craft beer. I spend most of my free time in the kitchen, snuggling my dog, or geeking out on craft beer with friends. I love trying new food and new restaurants, so living here is super exciting for me! Sharing meals with my friends and family is probably what makes me happiest in life. Cheers!
